Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of The Beatles, has shared an intriguing insight into the band's dynamics, revealing a unique and rather amusing rule that kept the peace among the members. According to Starr, the key to harmony in the band's early days was a simple yet effective strategy: owning up to farts in the van.
In a recent interview, Starr, now 86, shared this wisdom during his annual Peace and Love event. He advised younger bands, "If you’re in the van and you fart – own up to it." This might seem like a trivial matter, but Starr emphasizes the impact it can have on group dynamics.
Starr recounted a personal experience, recalling the time when four guys in a three-hour car journey would occasionally let out a fart. Initially, they would deny it, but Starr suggests that this led to unnecessary tension. He said, "We just occasionally with four guys in a three-hour car journey, one of us would make a noise. And at the beginning, it was like ‘well, it wasn’t me.’"
The drummer then proposed a solution: "And we realised, well, just to get it out of the way, say I did it. And it worked a treat and it took the pressure off." By taking responsibility, the band members could alleviate potential sources of conflict, as Starr noted, "It wasn’t a thing. We didn’t like go oh, ‘I’m going next.’"
This isn't the first time Starr has emphasized the importance of this rule. In 2015, during his induction speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he echoed a similar message, "A tip I’ve got for all bands who are starting out: when you’re in a van, if you fart, own up. It’ll cause hell if you don’t own up because everyone will blame everyone else. Make a pact in the van. We did and that’s how we get on so well."
